10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Painter in Halifax

July 1, 2026

Most Halifax homeowners feel a little uncomfortable questioning a contractor. It can feel confrontational — or like you’re insulting someone’s professionalism. But asking the right questions before you sign a painting contract isn’t rude; it’s smart. A confident, experienced contractor will welcome these questions. One who gets defensive or evasive is telling you something important.

Here are the ten questions worth asking every painting contractor in Halifax before any money changes hands.

1. Are You WCB-Covered?

WCB (Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia) coverage is mandatory for most trades in Nova Scotia. If a painter is injured at your home and they’re not WCB-covered, you could face significant financial liability. Ask for a current WCB clearance letter — any legitimate company will have one ready.

2. Do You Carry Liability Insurance?

Liability insurance protects your home if the crew accidentally damages something — a broken window, paint on a hardwood floor, a damaged light fixture. Most professional painting companies in Halifax carry at least $2 million in liability coverage. Ask for the certificate and verify the coverage is current.

3. Will You Provide a Written, Itemized Quote?

A professional quote should specify: which areas are included, the scope of prep work, how many coats will be applied, what brand and product line of paint is included, and the total cost including HST. If a contractor quotes you verbally with a round number and no breakdown, that’s a risk.

4. What Does Your Prep Process Include?

The quality of a paint job is largely determined by preparation. Ask specifically what they do before they pick up a brush: Do they fill nail holes and cracks? Sand? Clean surfaces? Apply primer? Protect floors and furniture? The answer to this question separates experienced painters from people who just own a paint roller.

5. Which Paint Brand and Product Will You Use?

Not all paint is the same. There’s a meaningful difference between builder-grade paint and premium lines like Benjamin Moore Regal Select or Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint. The brand and product line should be specified in your quote. If a contractor is vague about this, ask again — and be wary if they won’t commit to a specific product.

6. How Many Coats Are Included?

One coat of paint rarely looks as good as two — especially with colour changes. Some contractors quote a lower price by building in just one finish coat. Make sure your quote explicitly states the number of coats, and that primer is included where surfaces require it.

7. Who Will Be Doing the Work?

Some painting companies use their own trained crew; others subcontract jobs out. This isn’t automatically a problem, but you should know who will be in your home. Ask whether the crew is employed directly by the company, and whether the same lead person will be on-site throughout the job.

8. How Long Will the Job Take?

Get a clear timeline upfront. A rough estimate is fine — painting timelines depend on weather and drying time — but you should have a realistic window. If a contractor says “probably a day or two” for a full interior that would realistically take a week, that’s a problem waiting to happen.

9. Do You Offer a Warranty or Guarantee?

Many professional painting companies in Halifax offer some form of warranty on their work — typically covering peeling, cracking, or missed spots within one year. Ask what’s covered and what the process is if you notice an issue after the job is complete.

10. Can You Provide References or Show Past Work?

A company that’s been painting homes in Halifax for several years should be able to show you photos of completed work or connect you with a past client who’ll vouch for them. If they can’t do either, ask yourself why.
