Clear the Room — More Than You Think
Move furniture to the centre of the room or out entirely. Painters can work around a pile in the middle more easily than around furniture pushed against walls. Remove items from walls — art, mirrors, shelving — and take down curtains and blinds. If you are having closets painted, empty them completely. The more you clear, the faster the crew can work.
Communicate Any Concerns in Advance
If there are areas you do not want painted — a feature wall you want to keep, trim you want left as-is — tell the contractor before work starts, not during. Walk through the project with the crew leader on the first morning and confirm the scope in person. Misunderstandings that come up mid-project slow everything down.
Secure Your Pets
Dogs and cats are a safety hazard on painting job sites. Confine pets to areas not being painted, or arrange for them to be elsewhere during work days. Paint fumes, open doors, and unfamiliar people in the house are stressful for animals and create real risk.
Plan for Fumes and Drying Time
Even low-VOC latex paints produce odour during application and drying. Plan to ventilate rooms being painted and avoid using them until the paint has cured — typically 24–48 hours for light use. If anyone in your household has respiratory sensitivities, discuss low-VOC or zero-VOC product options with your painter in advance.
For Exterior Projects
Trim back shrubs and plants that touch the house. Move outdoor furniture and planters away from the work zone. If you have a dog that uses the yard, coordinate with the crew about which days they will be working in specific areas.
