Whether you are hiring a painter or doing some work yourself, certain interior painting mistakes show up repeatedly in Halifax homes. Some are minor. Some lead to repainting within a year.
Skipping the Primer
Primer is not optional — it is the reason the topcoat adheres, covers evenly, and lasts. Painting directly over glossy surfaces, fresh drywall patches, or previously water-damaged areas without primer leads to poor adhesion, uneven sheen, and early peeling. Halifax homes with older plaster walls particularly need proper priming because the plaster absorbs paint unevenly and causes the finish coat to look patchy regardless of how many coats are applied.
Choosing the Wrong Sheen
In Halifax’s humid climate, bathrooms and kitchens need at minimum a satin or semi-gloss finish that can handle moisture and wiping. Flat paint in high-traffic or humid areas shows marks, absorbs moisture, and cannot be cleaned without damaging the surface. Most Halifax painters recommend eggshell for general living areas, satin for kitchens and bathrooms, and flat or matte for ceilings.
Not Allowing Adequate Dry Time Between Coats
In Halifax’s humid summer months, water-based paint dries more slowly than the label suggests. Applying a second coat over an insufficiently dry first coat traps moisture, causes the finish to wrinkle or peel, and creates an uneven texture. Two coats applied correctly with proper drying time produce a better result than three coats rushed.
Painting Over Dirty or Greasy Surfaces
Kitchen walls, bathroom areas near the vanity, and areas around light switches accumulate grease and grime that prevent new paint from bonding. Washing walls with a TSP solution before painting dramatically improves adhesion. This step is frequently skipped in DIY projects and occasionally in rushed professional jobs.
Ignoring Repairs Before Painting
Paint does not hide cracks and nail pops — it highlights them. The sheen of fresh paint in raking light shows every imperfection. Filling, sanding, and priming all repairs before the first topcoat separates a professional-looking result from an amateurish one.
