Hiring a painter feels like a simple decision — until you’ve had a bad experience. A contractor who seemed professional at the quote stage shows up late, leaves paint on your floors, and disappears before finishing the trim. It happens more than people expect in Halifax, and it’s almost always avoidable if you know what to look for upfront.
Here are the things that genuinely matter when vetting a painting contractor in Halifax — from someone who’s been in this trade locally for over a decade.
1. WCB Coverage and Liability Insurance
This is non-negotiable. WCB (Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia) coverage protects you if a worker is injured on your property. Without it, you could be held liable for medical costs and lost wages. Liability insurance protects your home if something gets damaged during the job.
Ask every contractor for their WCB clearance letter and certificate of insurance before signing anything. A legitimate company will provide both without hesitation. You can verify CPM’s WCB coverage here.
2. A Written, Itemized Quote
Verbal quotes are worth nothing if something goes wrong. A trustworthy painting contractor will provide a written quote that specifies exactly what’s included: which rooms, how many coats, what brand of paint, what surface prep is involved, and the total price including HST.
If a contractor won’t put it in writing — or gives you a quote that just says “paint house: $3,200” with no breakdown — that’s a problem. You have no way of knowing what you’re actually getting.
3. Verifiable Local Reviews
Halifax is a smaller market, and reputation travels. Look for Google reviews that are specific — not just “great job!” but details about the actual experience: how the crew behaved, how they handled prep, whether the price matched the quote, whether they cleaned up after themselves.
Be a little sceptical of companies with 50 five-star reviews posted within a two-month window. That pattern sometimes indicates purchased reviews. A steady stream of reviews over years, including a few 3-4 star ones with genuine responses, is more credible. You can read CPM’s Google reviews here.
4. Clear Communication Before and During the Job
How a contractor communicates before you hire them tells you a lot about how they’ll communicate when there’s a problem on day three of a five-day job. Do they respond to messages within a reasonable time? Do they show up when they say they will for the estimate? Do they answer your questions directly without dodging?
A painting company with poor communication at the sales stage doesn’t magically become organized once they start work on your home.
5. Proper Surface Preparation
This one separates quality painters from fast painters. A good paint job starts long before the brush hits the wall. Proper prep includes cleaning surfaces, filling holes and cracks, sanding where needed, protecting floors and furniture with drop cloths, and applying primer where required.
If a contractor skips prep to save time, the paint will show it within a year — peeling, cracking, or uneven coverage. Ask specifically: “What does your prep process look like?”
6. Quality Paint — and Transparency About What They Use
Not all paint is the same. There’s a significant difference between builder-grade paint and premium lines like Benjamin Moore Regal Select or Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint. Premium paints cost more, but they cover better, look better, and last significantly longer.
Ask which paint brand and product line is included in the quote. If a contractor is evasive about this — or charges less than the going rate for materials — they may be using cheaper paint than what you’d expect.
